OBJECTIVES: To identify the etiology of vertigo/dizziness and determine the effectiveness of the video-head impulse test (vHIT) and the suppression head impulse paradigm (SHIMP) tests in distinguishing between peripheral and non-peripheral etiologies in children who presented to the otolaryngology department with complaints of vertigo/dizziness. METHODS: The vHIT and SHIMP tests were applied to the children. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain and saccade parameters were compared. RESULTS: In 27 children presenting with vertigo/dizziness, the most common etiological factor was inner ear malformation (IEM) (n = 6/27, 22.2%), followed by cochlear implant surgery (11.1%) and migraine (11.1%). Vestibular hypofunction was indicated by the vHIT results at a rate of 60% (9/15 children) and SHIMP results at 73.3% (11/15 children) among the children with a peripheral etiology, while these rates were 8.3% (1/12 children) and 25% (3/12 children), respectively, in the non-peripheral etiology group. SHIMP-VOR and vHIT-VOR gain values had a moderate positive correlation (p = 0.01, r = 0.349). While there were overt/covert saccades in the vHIT, anti-compensatory saccade (ACSs) were not observed in the SHIMP test (p = 0.041). The rates of abnormal vHIT-VOR gain (p = 0.001), over/covert saccades (p = 0.019), abnormal vHIT response (p = 0.014), ACSs (p = 0.001), and abnormal SHIMP response (p = 0.035) were significantly higher in the peripheral etiology group. CONCLUSIONS: IEM was the most common etiological cause, and the rate of vestibular hypofunction was higher in these children with peripheral vertigo. vHIT and SHIMP are effective and useful vestibular tests for distinguishing peripheral etiology from non-peripheral etiology in the pediatric population with vertigo/dizziness. These tests can be used together or alone, but the first choice should be the SHIMP test, considering its short application time (approximately 4-5 min) and simplicity.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to evaluate the changes in the audiovestibular system in adult patients with the diagnosis of chronic renal failure who were treated with hemodialysis. METHODS: Thirty-five patients diagnosed with chronic renal failure and receiving hemodialysis treatment 3 days a week and 35 healthy individuals were tested with pure tone audiometry, video head impulse test, and post-head shake nystagmus test. Dizziness Handicap Inventory was applied to all participants. RESULTS: The Dizziness Handicap Inventory scores of the patient groups are higher than the control groups (P=.001). In the video head impulse test, there is no statistically significant difference between the patient and control groups in terms of gain asymmetry. 17.1% of the patients had both left and right lateral saccades (P=.03). A statistically significant difference was also found after the post-head shake test (P=.025). In the patient group, an inverse relationship between the presence of left anterior right posterior saccades and blood urea nitrogen-creatinine ratio and a direct relationship between the presence of right anterior left posterior saccades and creatinine elevation were determined. The presence of saccades in the video head impulse test increased significantly as the disease duration of hemodialysis patients increased. CONCLUSION: It was determined that the overt and covert saccades in the video head impulse test increased significantly as the creatinine increased and the duration of the disease increased in the patients with chronic renal failure. The common clinical usage of video head impulse test in monitoring the vestibular side effects of creatinine elevation and disease duration in chronic renal failure patients may be possible with future studies.

Objective:To observe the results of dynamic visual acuity screening tests in patients with peripheral vertigo and explore its clinical significance. Methods:The number of 48 healthy volunteers were enrolled as control group and 25 peripheral vertigo patients as experimental group. In the experimental group, there are 12 patients with vestibular neuritis, 1 patient with Hunt syndrome, 5 patients with sudden deafness with vertigo and 7 patients with bilateral vestibular dysfunction. Horizontal and vertical dynamic visual acuity screening tests were performed on them. The number of lost rows of horizontal and vertical dynamic visual acuity was compared between the control group and the experimental group to figure out if there is a statistical difference. The number of lost rows of horizontal and vertical dynamic visual acuity was compared within the experimental group to figure out if there is a statistical difference. The two groups of 18 cases of unilateral vestibular function decline and 7 cases of bilateral vestibular function decline in the experimental group were compared with the control group, and figure out if there is a statistical difference. Results:The median number of lost rows of horizontal dynamic visual acuity in 48 healthy volunteers was 1.5 and median number of lost rows of vertical dynamic visual acuity was 1.0 in the control group. The median number of lost rows of horizontal dynamic visual acuity of 26 healthy volunteers was 6 and median number of lost rows of vertical dynamic visual acuity was 5 in the experimental group. Compared to the experimental group, the number of lost rows both have statistical significance in horizontal and vertical dynamic visual acuity(P<0.01). The comparison of horizontal and vertical lost rows within the test group also have statistical significance(P<0.01). Twenty five patients with exceptional vestibular disease in the experimental group were divided into unilateral vestibular function reduction group(n=18) and bilateral vestibular function reduction group(n=7). Compared with the control group, there was significant differences in the number of horizontal and vertical lost rows(P<0.01) within the three groups. After pairwise comparison, the number of lost rows of horizontal and vertical in the control group was significantly lower than that in the unilateral vestibular function reduction group and the bilateral vestibular function reduction group(P<0.01). There was a highly significant correlation between the number of horizontally lost rows of DVA and the mean vHIT values of bilateral horizontal semicircular canals in 25 patients(P<0.01); and a highly significant correlation between the number of vertically lost rows of DVA and the mean vHIT values of vertical semicircular canals in 4 groups bilaterally(P<0.01). Conclusion:The Dynamic Visual Acuity Screening Test is a useful addition to existing tests of peripheral vestibular function, particularly the vHIT test, and provides a rapid assessment of the extent of 2 Hz VOR impairment in patients with reduced vestibular function.

The computerized rotational head impulse test (crHIT) uses a computer-controlled rotational chair to deliver whole-body rotational impulses to assess the semicircular canals. The crHIT has only been described for horizontal head plane rotations. The purpose of this study was to describe the crHIT for vertical head plane rotations. In this preliminary study, we assessed four patients with surgically confirmed unilateral peripheral vestibular abnormalities and two control subjects. Results indicated that the crHIT was well-tolerated for both horizontal head plane and vertical head plane stimuli. The crHIT successfully assessed each of the six semicircular canals. This study suggests that the crHIT has the potential to become a new laboratory-based vestibular test for both the horizontal and vertical semicircular canals.

Usher Syndrome classification takes into account the absence of vestibular function but its correlation with genotype is not well characterized. We intend to investigate whether video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) is useful in screening and to differentiate Usher Syndrome types. 29 Usher patients (USH) with a genetically confirmed diagnosis and 30 healthy controls were studied with vHIT and dizziness handicap inventory questionnaire (DHI). Statistical significant differences between USH1, USH2 and controls were found in the vestibulo-ocular-reflex (VOR) gain of all SCCs, with USH1 patients consistently presenting smaller gains. VOR gain of the right lateral SCC could discriminate controls from USH1, and USH2 from USH1 with an overall diagnostic accuracy of 90%. USH1 DHI correlated with VOR (ρ = - 0,971, p = 0.001). Occurrence rate of covert and overt lateral semicircular canals refixation saccades (RS) was significantly different between groups, being higher in USH1 patients (p < 0.001). USH1 peak velocity of covert and overt saccades was higher for lateral semicircular canals (p < 0.05 and p = 0.001) compared with USH2 and controls. Covert saccades occurrence rate for horizontal SCCs could discriminate USH1 from USH2 patients and controls with a diagnostic accuracy of 85%. vHIT is a fast and non-invasive instrument which allowed us to screen and distinguish Usher patients from controls with a high precision. Importantly, its use allowed further discrimination between USH1 from USH2 groups. Moreover, VOR gain seems to correlate with vertigo-related quality of life in more severe phenotypes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The incidence of intralabyrinthine schwannomas is increasing, and a growing attention is given to the detrimental effects on hearing function. On the contrary, the vestibular profile of intralabyrinthine vestibular schwannomas (VSs) is still not well understood. We aimed to investigate and report the observed relationships between the intralabyrinthine location of the schwannomas and objective and subjective vestibular profile of the patients. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 20 consecutive individuals with sporadic intralabyrinthine schwannomas and grouped according to the intralabyrinthine location of the schwannomas. Vestibular testing consisted of the video head impulse test of all three semicircular canals, the caloric test, cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, and the dizziness handicap inventory. A nonparametric unpaired t test was performed to compare groups, and Fisher's exact test was used for categorical data. RESULTS: The median video head impulse test gains (lateral, anterior, posterior) were 0.40, 0.50, and 0.75 for intravestibular schwannomas and 0.93, 1.52, and 0.91 for intracochlear schwannomas ( p = 0.0001, p = 0.009, p = 0.33), respectively. Caloric unilateral weakness had a median of 100% for intravestibular schwannomas and 14% for intracochlear schwannomas ( p = 0.0001). The mean dizziness handicap inventory was 21 for intravestibular schwannomas and 1 for cochlear schwannomas ( p = 0.02). There were no significant differences in vestibular evoked myogenic potentials according to intralabyrinthine location. CONCLUSION: By both objective and subjective measures, intralabyrinthine schwannomas with an intravestibular component has significantly worse vestibular function than schwannomas with purely cochlear involvement.

OBJECTIVE: In our study, it was aimed to compare vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain and saccade parameters in HIMP and SHIMP tests between gender, right and left ears, and age groups in healthy adults and to examine the correlation between the tests regarding these parameters. METHODS: The study included a total of 100 healthy participants aged 18-65 and without complaints of hearing loss, dizziness, lightheadedness, and/or imbalance. Participants underwent HIMP and SHIMP tests, respectively. RESULTS: No significant difference was found in HIMP and SHIMP VOR gain values according to gender and age groups. SHIMP duration was significantly longer in women. VOR gain values were lower in the right ear. HIMP amplitude values were higher and SHIMP amplitude values were lower with increasing age. In older age groups, SHIMP peak velocity and duration values were significantly decreased, while HIMP duration value increased and latency value was longer. In the 1st saccade, a significant difference was obtained between HIMP and SHIMP tests for all saccade parameters. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the VOR gain values of HIMP and SHIMP tests. CONCLUSIONS: The present study showed that VOR gain and saccade parameters obtained in different age groups will be important in determining clinical outcomes in vestibular pathologies.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the correlation of video head impulse test, functional head impulse test and Dizziness Handicap Inventory results in patients with chronic unilateral vestibular loss, and to compare the results with healthy controls. METHODS: Forty-eight patients diagnosed with chronic unilateral vestibular loss and 35 healthy individuals, aged 18-65 years, were included. The video head impulse test, functional head impulse test and Dizziness Handicap Inventory were administered. RESULTS: A significant positive correlation was found between functional head impulse test and video head impulse test results for the study group in all semicircular canals (p < 0.05). There was no significant correlation between Dizziness Handicap Inventory, functional head impulse test and video head impulse test results (p > 0.05). The functional head impulse test and video head impulse test results of the control group were significantly higher than those of the study group in all semicircular canals planes (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In chronic unilateral vestibular loss patients, with high head accelerations, the functional head impulse test indicates deterioration in vestibulo-ocular reflex functionality. It would be beneficial to include the video head impulse test and functional head impulse test in clinical practice as complementary tests in vestibulo-ocular reflex evaluation.

PURPOSE: In case of an acute unilateral vestibulopathy (UVP), compensatory strategies such as restoration and adaptation will lead to a decrease in intensity of the symptoms. Although measurements of compensatory strategies are available, currently, an overview taking the different strategies into account is lacking. The objectives of this study are to explore compensatory strategies and to investigate the association between compensatory strategies and patient characteristics. METHODS: Restoration was objectified by the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain on the video head impulse test, and adaptation-consisting of visual, multisensory, and behavioral substitution-was objectified by the Visual Vertigo Analog Scale (VVAS), Antwerp Vestibular Compensation Index (AVeCI), and Perez and Rey score (PR score), respectively. Adequate restoration and adaptation levels were interpreted as follows: VOR gain > 0.80, VVAS ≤ 40%, AVeCI > 0 and PR score ≤ 55. RESULTS: Sixty-two UVP patients, 34 men and 28 women, were included with an average age of 52.1 ± 17.3 years. At 10.5 ± 1.4 weeks after onset, 41.9% of the UVP patients reached adequate restoration levels and 58.1-86.9% reached adequate adaptation levels. Furthermore, significant associations were found between (1) restoration status and UVP etiology [Odds Ratio (OR) with 95% CI: 4.167 {1.353;12.828}] and balance performance (OR: 4.400 {1.258;15.386}), (2) visual sensory substitution status and perceived handicap (OR: 8.144 {1.644;40.395}), anxiety (OR: 10.000 {1.579;63.316}) and depression (OR: 16.667 {2.726;101.896}), and (3) behavioral substitution status and balance performance (OR: 4.143 {1.341;12.798}). CONCLUSION: UVP patients with adequate compensatory strategies presented with better balance performance, lower perceived handicap, and lower anxiety and depression scores.

OBJECTIVES: Given the expected rise in dementia prevalence, early diagnosis is vital. As a growing body of literature has identified a potential association between vestibular function and cognition, vestibular assessment may aid in early screening. The aim of the study was to better comprehend the proposed association between vestibular function and Alzheimer's disease (AD) by comparing vestibular parameters (vestibular function testing and clinical balance measures) between a group with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), AD, and healthy controls with age-normal cognition. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of the GECkO study, an ongoing prospective single-center longitudinal cohort study. This study included 100 older adults (55 to 84 years). A total of 33 participants with MCI, 17 participants with AD, and 50 participants of age, sex, and hearing-matched healthy controls were included. RESULTS: Participants with AD demonstrated a delayed latency of the p13 component measured by cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) compared with healthy controls and participants with MCI. Other measures including n23 latency, presence of intact responses, rectified amplitude, mean rectified voltage (measured by cVEMP) and lateral vestibulo-ocular reflex gain (measured by video Head Impulse Test [vHIT]) did not differ between groups. The Timed Up and Go (TUG), Performance-Oriented Mobility Assessment-Balance subscale (POMA-B), and Functional Gait Assessment (FGA) differed significantly between the three groups. Here, more cognitively impaired groups were associated with worse clinical balance scores. CONCLUSIONS: Vestibular and balance deficits were more prevalent in groups with increasing cognitive decline. Regarding vestibular function testing, p13 latency as measured by cVEMP was delayed in participants with AD. Other cVEMP or vHIT measures did not differ between groups. All three clinical balance assessments (TUG, POMA-B, and FGA) resulted in worse scores along the AD continuum. Future research integrating vestibular parameters that add value (including otolith function testing, balance, and spatial navigation) is recommended to validate the association between vestibular function and cognition while avoiding redundant testing.

Long-term deficits of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) elicited by head rotation can be partially compensated by catch-up saccades (CuS). These saccades are initially visually guided, but their latency can greatly decrease resulting in short latency CuS (SL-CuS). It is still unclear what triggers these CuS and what are the underlying neural circuits. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the impact of cerebellar pathology on CuS by comparing their characteristics between two groups of patients with bilateral vestibular hypofunction, with or without additional cerebellar dysfunction. We recruited 12 patients with both bilateral vestibular hypofunction and cerebellar dysfunction (BVH-CD group) and 12 patients with isolated bilateral vestibular hypofunction (BVH group). Both groups were matched for age and residual VOR gain. Subjects underwent video head impulse test recording of the horizontal semicircular canals responses as well as recording of visually guided saccades in the step, gap, and overlap paradigms. Latency and gain of the different saccades were calculated. The mean age for BVH-CD and BVH was, respectively, 67.8 and 67.2 years, and the mean residual VOR gain was, respectively, 0.24 and 0.26. The mean latency of the first catch-up saccade was significantly longer for the BVH-CD group than that for the BVH group (204 ms vs 145 ms, p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the latency of visually guided saccades between the two groups, for none of the three paradigms. The gain of covert saccades tended to be lower in the BVH-CD group than in BVH group (t test; p = 0.06). The mean gain of the 12° or 20° visually guided saccades were not different in both groups. Our results suggest that the cerebellum plays a role in the generation of compensatory SL-CuS observed in BVH patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the older adults with chronic dizziness using the Barany Society's presbyvestibulopathy (PVP) diagnostic criteria and to assess the clinical usability of the criteria. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Single tertiary medical center. METHODS: Among a total of 1964 patients aged 60 years or older, 55 patients who had symptoms suitable for the PVP criteria and who underwent all 3 vestibular function tests were analyzed. Of these 55 patients, 13 patients were diagnosed with PVP based on the peripheral vestibular hypofunction criteria; the remaining 42 patients were categorized as patients without PVP. RESULTS: In both patients with PVP and patients without PVP, postural imbalance or unsteadiness was the most frequently reported vestibular symptom. The rotatory chair test contributed the most to the quantitative diagnosis of PVP (6 of 13), followed by the caloric response test (3 of 13) and video head impulse test (vHIT; 2 of 13). When we included the presence of catch-up saccades in addition to the vHIT gain in the diagnostic criteria, 5 patients without PVP were additionally diagnosed with PVP. Furthermore, when accounting for the inclusion of catch-up saccades, patients who experienced recurrent falls demonstrated a significantly higher rate of impairments in the lateral and posterior semicircular canals according to the multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: Considering the catch-up saccades in addition to vHIT gain seemed to contribute to the diagnosis of PVP and prediction of recurrent fall risks in older adults. Further studies are needed to solidify the diagnostic criteria for PVP.

The results of video head impulse tests (video-HITs) may be confounded by data artifacts of various origins, including pupil size and eyelid obstruction of the pupil. This study aimed to determine the effect of these factors on the results of video-HITs. We simulated ptosis by adopting pharmacological dilatation of the pupil in 21 healthy participants (11 women; age 24-58 years). Each participant underwent video-HITs before and after pupillary dilatation using 0.5% tropicamide. We assessed the changes in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain, corrective saccade amplitude, and frequency of eyelid flicks. After pupillary dilatation, the VOR gain decreased for both right (RAC; 1.12 [Formula: see text] 0.12 vs. 1.01 [Formula: see text] 0.16, p = 0.011) and left anterior canals (LACs; 1.15 [Formula: see text] 0.13 vs. 0.96 [Formula: see text] 0.14, p < 0.001), and right posterior canal (RPC, 1.10 [Formula: see text] 0.13 vs. 0.98 [Formula: see text] 0.09, p = 0.001). The corrective saccade amplitudes also decreased significantly for all four vertical canals. The frequency of eyelid flicks, however, did not change. The changes of VOR gain were positively correlated with the lid excursion in RPC (r = 0.629, p = 0.002) and LPC (r = 0.549, p = 0.010). Our study indicates that eyelid position and pupil size should be considered when interpreting the results of video-HITs, especially for the vertical canals. Pupils should be shrunk in a very well-lit room, and artifacts should be prevented by taping or lifting the eyelids as required during video-HITs.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a case series where loss of magnetic resonance fluid signal intensity in the posterior semicircular canal (SCC) corresponded with a functional deficit on clinical and video head impulse testing, and most likely a result of canal fibrosis or obstruction. PATIENTS: Three patients with an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showing loss of T2-weighted signal intensity in their posterior SCC corresponding to a vestibular weakness in that canal. INTERVENTIONS: All patients underwent a comprehensive neuro-otologic examination. Vestibulo-ocular reflex was evaluated using clinical head impulse testing (cHIT) and quantified with video head impulse testing. MRI for all patients was obtained using clinical protocols for gadolinium-enhanced MRI of the internal auditory canal on 1.5 or 3 T scanners, which all included high-resolution, heavily T2-weighted imaging of the membranous labyrinth. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Correlation of MRI findings with vestibular weakness in the corresponding posterior SCC. RESULTS: Subject 1 showed abnormal vHIT in the left lateral and left posterior SCCs. MRI showed loss of T2 signal intensity of the entire left posterior SCC as well as in the posterior limb of the superior SCC. Subject 2 showed isolated loss of function (cHIT) and low gain with catch-up saccade (vHIT) of the left posterior SCC. MRI showed loss of T2 signal intensity of the superior portion of the left posterior SCC, as well as in the posterior limb of the superior SCC. Subject 3 showed catch-up saccades of the left posterior SCC on cHIT and vHIT and loss of T2 signal intensity of the entire left posterior SCC and partial loss of bilateral lateral SCC on MRI. CONCLUSIONS: In this case series, loss of posterior SCC function correlated with vestibular function testing and high-resolution, T2-weighted MRI findings, perhaps related to fibrosis of the posterior SCC.

OBJECTIVE: A normal video Head Impulse Test is the gold standard in the emergency department to rule-in patients with an acute vestibular syndrome and a stroke. We aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of vHIT metrics regarding the vestibulo-ocular reflex gain and the corrective saccades in detecting vestibular strokes. METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study (convenience sample) of patients presenting with acute vestibular syndrome in the emergency department of a tertiary referral centre between February 2015 and May 2020. We screened 1677 patients and enrolled 76 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria of acute vestibular syndrome. All patients underwent video head impulse test with automated and manual data analysis. A delayed MRI served as a gold standard for vestibular stroke confirmation. RESULTS: Out of 76 patients, 52 were diagnosed with acute unilateral vestibulopathy and 24 with vestibular strokes. The overall accuracy of detecting stroke with an automated vestibulo-ocular reflex gain was 86.8%, compared to 77.6% for cumulative saccade amplitude and automatic saccade mean peak velocity measured by an expert and 71% for cumulative saccade amplitude and saccade mean peak velocity measured automatically. Gain misclassified 13.1% of the patients as false positive or false negative, manual cumulative saccade amplitude and saccade mean peak velocity 22.3%, and automated cumulative saccade amplitude and saccade mean peak velocity 28.9% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We found a better accuracy of video head impulse test for the diagnosis of vestibular strokes when using the vestibulo-ocular reflex gain than using saccade metrics. Nevertheless, saccades provide an additional and important information for video head impulse test evaluation. The automated saccade detection algorithm is not yet perfect compared to expert analysis, but it may become a valuable tool for future non-expert video head impulse test evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Infants and young children with vestibulocochlear nerve (VCN) hypoplasia/aplasia present with severe hearing loss and are candidates for cochlear implantation (CI). It is unknown whether vestibular function is related to CI outcome and if vestibular tests can guide the operation decision. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to describe the vestibular function in patients with VCN hypoplasia/aplasia before a possible CI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two ears in 23 patients were tested between 2019 and 2022 with bone-conducted cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (BCcVEMP), video head impulse test (vHIT) and miniice-water caloric test (mIWC). RESULTS: All ears could be tested with at least one vestibular test and 83% could be tested with more than one method. Twenty-nine ears (61%) showed normal function with at least one method. The presence of a normal response to any test doubled the likelihood of a measured hearing threshold after CI, the best predictors being the BCcVEMP and vHIT (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Canal function may represent a predictor of auditive pathway integrity with a possible favourable audiological outcome after CI operation. SIGNIFICANCE: Our results demonstrate high vestibular response rates suggesting a functioning pathway despite the radiological diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) are at increased risk of falling and have poor quality of life. Several research groups are currently developing and investigating vestibular implants to treat BVP. The goal was to identify how many patients can be considered eligible for vestibular implantation. METHODS: The objective vestibular implantation criteria for research were applied to the results of the caloric irrigation test, the sinusoidal harmonic acceleration test, the video head impulse test, and the cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential tests. RESULTS: Vestibular implant eligibility was situated between 3.6% and 15.7% (semicircular canal implant: 3.6%; otolith implant: 15.7%; combined implant: 4.8%). Only 16 out of the 29 patients (55%) eligible for a vestibular implant had bilateral severe-to-profound hearing loss. The remaining 45% (13/29) thus have better hearing in at least 1 ear. CONCLUSION: Vestibular implant eligibility in an ear, nose, and throat department was situated between 3.6% and 15.7%, depending on the type of implant that was considered. In addition, the data showed that 45% of the eligible patients had normal-to-moderate hearing in at least 1 ear. In other words, only recruiting patients with (bilateral) severe-to-profound hearing loss for vestibular implantation leads to the systematic exclusion of about half of the candidates. Structure-preserving surgical techniques are thus a major future challenge in the field of vestibular implantation.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to compare the possible functional involvement of the vestibulo-ocular reflex in the follicular and luteal phases. METHODS: The research was carried out at a university located in eastern Turkey. The study included 37 healthy female volunteering students aged 18-25 years. The functional head impulse test was applied twice in the follicular phase and in the luteal phase, and the results in both phases were compared. RESULTS: In the functional head impulse test, statistically significant differences were obtained between the follicular phase and the luteal phase at the stimulus to the lateral semicircular canal direction total and 6000°/s2 acceleration percentage of correct answers values, the posterior semicircular canal direction stimulations at 3000°/s2 and 5000°/s2 acceleration percentage of correct answers values, and the anterior semicircular canal direction stimulations at 5000°/s2 acceleration percentage of correct answers values. CONCLUSION: In the luteal phase, which corresponds to the period before menstruation, the vestibulo-ocular reflex is functionally negatively affected.
